Hi everyone!
It is my pleasure to announce that @JonnyBeers and I have finalized and launched the official YVRBeerTweetup website! The two of us have been working hard lately and have some big things planned for the near future. I will be posting any future blog posts and event announcements on the new website so please have a look and let me know what you think! www.yvrbeertweetup.com
Cheers,

August 2nd is one of my favourite days of the year. It’s like Christmas for beer drinkers; it’s IPA Day. If you’re a craft brewery in North America, especially the West Coast, you’re generally judged how good you are by how good your IPA is. Northwest IPAs are so strong and hoppy but carry with them such nice tropical flavours like grapefruit that they’re hard not to like. I’d like to celebrate IPA Day by, first of all, cracking an IPA or two but also by listing some of BC’s top IPAs.
So, without further rambling, here are some of my favourite IPAs from the great breweries of British Columbia. (In No Particular Order)
Driftwood Brewing’s Fat Tug – Arguably the best IPA in the country, it took home the ‘Beer of the Year’ award in 2011. 7% and 80+ IBUs make up this wonderful brew that I think everyone should try.
Red Racer IPA – Coming out of Red Racer aka Brewery of the Year award winner this beer has a nice bite of bitterness to it and a lasting aftertaste. I appreciate that this beer comes in a 6-pack rather than a bomber as well.
Central City Imperial IPA – This might be my “End of the world” beer. I could drink this until the day I die. So well balanced with the perfect amount of hops. Highly recommend you try it!
Lighthouse Switchback IPA – In my opinion this is the best beer coming out of Lighthouse Brewing on the island (Their Belgian Black is a close second). It’s well balanced, crisp and one of the most refreshing IPAs I’ve ever had. Very sessionable. Grab a 6-pack and enjoy.
Russel IP’eh – This is the IPA I go to whenever I’m having beer with my buddies and teammates at the rugby club. There isn’t much better than sitting in the grandstands on a sunny day and quaffing on a bottle of IP’eh. (Go Caps Go!)
These are my top 5 favourite BC IPAs and I’m looking forward to all the new and old breweries coming out with even better ones!
What are your favourite IPAs coming out of local breweries? Which ones did I miss?
Thanks for reading, cheers!
If you read the whole post there’s a special treat for you at the end
If you follow me on twitter you’ve probably seen my tweets about hosting YVR Beer Tweetup with @JonnyBeers and if you haven’t been out to one of these events then you probably don’t know what it is. Let me explain in this post.
In my opinion, YVR Beer Tweetup is a networking event where you are able to meet lots of awesome people that share similar interests with you whether that be craft beer or social media. That being said, YVR Beer Tweetup is something different for each person. For some it’s an event where they can experience a new bar or restaurant (we go to a new venue each tweetup if possible), for others it’s a place where they can try exclusive one-off casks by some of BC’s best breweries (vanilla bean espresso oatmeal stout anyone?). Some people take YVR Beer Tweetup as a time to reconnect with friends, drink amazing beers, have a good time and then head to the clubs afterwards.
YVR Beer Tweetup is whatever you want it to be and whatever you make it: a networking event, a craft beer event, a party or all of the above. Jon and I are doing our best to make each event better than the last. Make sure to check out the next #YVRBeerTweetup at Portland Craft on August 22nd and stop by our beer garden on August 4th at the first show of the Concerts in the Square series in North Vancouver.

Thanks for reading! Here’s a little treat for you guys. A list of awesome mashups!

Last week when I was looking up the recipe for Redheaded Sluts, I stumbled upon this variation of the shot. I knew that it had some comedy value (which is right up my alley), and the potential of tasting great. Hope you agree.
Lindsay Lohan
Level of drunk: 4/5
What you’ll need:
- 1 oz of peach schnapps
- 1 oz of Jagermeister
- 1 oz of cranberry juice
- ½ a can of Coca-cola
Preparation:
1. Pour the schnapps, Jagermeister and cranberry juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
2. Give it a good shake.
3. Pour into an old fashioned glass with ice.
4. Fill the rest of the glass with the Coca-cola
5. Drink, drank, drunk.
Verdict:
Get it? A Redheaded Slut full of coke? HA! Ok anyways, I found this drink to be both delicious and curious at the same time. The combination of the specialty shot and coke causes it to taste like something I have had before, but I still can’t put my finger on it. The closest I came to identifying it is peach Jello, but I know that isn’t it. So maybe someone can help me out? Comment on this blog post or send me a tweet if you figure it out.
Recently I was asked how to make a Redheaded Slut, and by my and the other person’s surprise, I wasn’t 100% sure. So, going on the fact that not only did I get a request for it but also, that I should know how to make this very popular shot, I give you this post.
Redheaded Slut
Level of drunk: 5/5
What you’ll need:
- 1 oz of peach schnapps
- 1 oz of Jagermeister
- 1½ oz of cranberry juice
Preparation:
1. Pour all three ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
2. Give it a good shake.
3. Pour into shot glasses.
4. Drink, drank, drunk.
Verdict:
If you don’t know what a Redheaded Slut already tastes like, then you are missing out my friend. This shot is particularly easy to take because of its delicious taste. The schnapps and cranberry juice bring a sweet fruit taste to the herbal liquor, to balance everything out.
